Three’s Company

The Rule of Odds, or the rule of odd numbers, states that it is necessary to have a balanced relationship with the environment. We prefer balance and feel comfortable with these groups of 3. Groups of 2 or 4 can sometimes create a sense of competition, where the odd group tends to balance it a bit. This is a very subjective rule, but it does create balance.

Remember that the number can actually be higher than that. Larger numbers of objects, but can be visually subdivided into groups of 3, creating more coherence in the composition.
